Its last victory, in early March, was an impressive 1-0 success against Carrick Rangers at Taylor’s Avenue. Since then, it has lost against Linfield (6-0) and Crusaders (1-0). This week it was announced that manager Barry Gray has been forced to step back from his football commitments due to a cancer diagnosis. Everyone at Mourneview Park wishes him a full recovery.

Glenavon approaches the Newry fixture with the luxury of an almost fully fit squad. Long-term absentee Isaac Baird is the only player unavailable for selection due to injury. That said, defender Conor Kerr and winger Peter Campbell are both suspended. “James Doona, who missed out against Loughgall, is back and Mark Haughey is also in the squad,” said manager Stephen McDonnell. “We have had a good two weeks’ training. The players are in good shape.”

McDonnell rejects suggestions that, in no danger of relegation and without the possibility of Europa Conference League qualification, Glenavon has nothing left to play for. “We want to win all five of the remaining fixtures,” he said. “When the players take the field, it is a given that they will all give their very best. It is not my style to bang drums about effort and desire but no one in our dressing room should have any doubt about what is expected.”

The Blues’ boss accepts that the team’s last two results – a 5-0 defeat at Larne and a 2-1 reverse at home to Loughgall – were disappointing. “The performances were not good enough,” he added. “The players know exactly what the other coaches and I think. We have not been consistent enough over the last few months.”

McDonnell expects Newry to be a tough opponent. “They are at the bottom and fighting to stay in the league,” he continued. “They will be highly motivated and totally committed. We will need to be equally determined. If we work hard and play well, there is no reason why we can’t take the three points.”
