Despite performing creditably, Glenavon lost 2-0 against Derry City.

Dom Thomas (17 mins) scored the first goal. A Niall Quinn own goal (48 mins) sealed the Candystripes’ victory.

The visitors took the lead when Len O’Sullivan failed to clear Mickey Duffy’s cross from the left and Thomas shot into the roof of the net from 6 yards.

Nine minutes later Jack Malone almost equalised.  His well struck attempt from 22 yards hit the underside of the crossbar, bounced close to the goal line and was cleared.

Duffy was also involved in Derry’s second goal. His cross hit Quinn at the far post and flew into the net.

Aaron Prendergast, back after a loan spell with Dundela, almost scored twice within sixty seconds of entering the fray.

Aaron Heaney threw the ball to Harry Lynch who crossed from the right. A.P.’s first attempt hit the post, and his follow-up effort was saved by Brian Maher. Almost straight from the goalkeeper’s clearance, Prendergast made space on the left but shot wide when he might have done better.

Heaney fired the ball past a post after he picked up a poor clearance by Maher.

Veteran striker Pat Hoban headed over the crossbar from Duffy’s cross.

Sean Carlin, named “Player of the Match,” shot over after good work by Lynch.

When substitute Davy McDaid’s shot was saved, A.P. blasted the rebound wide.

Peter Campbell, always a threat on the left, left fly from an acute angle. His attempt was on target but struck a defender and was cleared.
